5 Benefits of Individualized and Student Centered Tutoring

What are the benefits of tutoring?

Students have many different learning styles, which can make it challenging for teachers in the classroom setting to deliver instruction that resonates with them. An auditory learner, for example, may struggle to fully comprehend the visual equations of an algebra lesson. It’s easy for that student to fall behind, especially if they don’t know how to advocate for themselves.

Unfortunately, this can have the snowball effect of getting poor grades, losing confidence, and becoming disengaged. But fortunately, one-on-one tutoring support that focuses on the materials and assignments a student is already struggling with, can be very effective.

In this blog post, we present five benefits of individualized and student-centered tutoring.

1. One-On-One Attention

We mentioned learning styles above, and this is where one-on-one tutoring is critical. The most common learning styles are visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. A student can also possess more than one. Tutors trained in the individualized, student-centered approach understand your child’s learning style and can tailor instruction accordingly.

This setting can also eliminate the distractions of a classroom environment. Even the best managed classrooms present distractions that take students off task from ambient noise to the urge to socialize with friends and peers. Private tutoring encourages focus in a more comfortable space.

2. Students Develop Better Study Habits

The best individualized tutoring methods not only help students grasp the subject material better, but it allows them to become stronger learners, which improves their study habits. Whereas falling behind causes the aforementioned snowball effect, better study habits set off a chain reaction of students taking more initiative and ownership of their schoolwork.

3. Encourages Students to Be Stronger Self-Advocates

Let’s face it: advocating for yourself at any age isn’t easy, but those who start early will likely have greater success later in life. When it comes to understanding class content, asking questions is critical. At the same time, it’s daunting for kids and creates anxiety. What if I sound stupid? The voice in their head may say. Will my teacher get mad at me? Are people going to laugh?

Tutors are such valuable assets here because they create a safe place for students to learn how to ask questions. Your child can become more comfortable asking questions, big or small, without feeling self-conscious.

4. Builds Confidence

Confidence is a significant marker of student achievement. In fact, the National Education Association reported that, “Confident students are more likely to speak in class, ask for help when needed, and they absorb material faster and are more excited to learn.

Individualized, student-centered tutoring helps students build confidence, which encourages a more creative thought process that can be applied across all areas of their curriculum.

5. Leads to Higher Test Scores & Better Grades

Ah standardized testing, the bane of many a student’s academic existence. From the IAR and ISA to ACT and SAT, it’s safe to say that students don’t look forward to testing days. Schoolwork is stressful enough, and testing adds another layer to it. Working privately with a tutor as an after school supplement can prepare your child to score higher on Illinois and national standardized tests.

It’s important to note that tutors and classroom teachers both offer vital roles in your child’s education. One doesn’t replace the other; rather, they complement each other through a collaborative approach with the goal of empowering your child with the tools to reach their full potential.
