Summer is a special time of year. The kids are home from school, the weather is perfect, and there’s more time for family bonding. While you’ve been creating those special family memories this summer, we hope that you haven't forgotten to stay on top of academics! The brain is like a muscle; it needs to be continuously challenged in order to stay in shape. If you have stayed on top of academics over the summer, you have set your kids up for success when they return to school in the fall.
If academics have taken a backseat so far this summer, don’t worry! There are still plenty of fun ways to keep your children’s brains sharp over the next few weeks before school starts. Here’s what you can do!
1. Find an Educational Podcast or YouTube Channel
For many families, a few road trips are on the summer agenda. Make the most of the time in the car by tuning in to an educational podcast. With so many podcasts to choose from, you’ll have no problem finding one that’s age appropriate for your family. Explore the episodes by But Why: A Podcast for Curious Kids
or dive into STEM topics with Brains On! Science Podcast for Kids.
Additionally, kids can explore new topics through different YouTube channels such as CrashCourse Kids, National Geographic Kids, or TED-Ed. These are perfect for a rainy day when you’re stuck inside or in the car on a long drive. Take this even further by having your child pick a topic, do some research, and create their own educational video!
2. Study a Language
Language learning opens so many doors in life. It’s never too late to start but the earlier the better! Use a free application like Duolingo to explore different languages. Once your family has decided on the language you want to learn, you can consider a private tutor to take things to the next level. If you’re taking any international trips in the future, you have the perfect reason to start learning a new language. Your child will feel so rewarded if they can say “hello!”, “thank you”, or even order a dessert in the local language! Even if you don’t have any international trips planned, language learning is a great way to keep the brain in shape.
3. Explore your Local Library Programs
Libraries are the true gems of a community. Check out the summer programs offered at your local library to see what’s offered. You might discover outdoor storytelling, art workshops, book clubs, or movie nights! And of course, don’t forget to check out a few books for summer reading. Make the most of summer reading by having your child keep a book journal where they can write reviews of the books they’ve read. In addition, you can include some writing prompts: write an alternative ending to the book, create a new character, or change the setting are a just few ideas.
4. Find a Tutor
Working with a tutor is an excellent way to make sure your child is ready to head back to school in the fall. A weekly tutoring session helps to provide academic consistency and will make the back-to-school transition much easier. Summer is the perfect time to catch up in academic areas that are challenging for your child.
