School's Back in Session: How Will You Stay on Track?

Create good habits early and reap the benefits all year!

The beginning of a new school year is full of possibility. New teachers, topics, maybe even a new school. The first few weeks can be really exciting as kids get a feel for their new environment for the next nine months. A typical trend we see in education is a strong start followed by a decline in motivation around the second or third month into the year. The good news is that it doesn't have to be this way! Consider the 4 tips below to keep the momentum going all school year long.

1. Don’t Miss Parent Teacher Conferences
Busy parents might find it difficult to fit conferences into their schedules, but it’s such a great opportunity to learn about your child’s teacher and their progress in class. Be sure to put this on your calendar and attend. If your school doesn’t host conferences early on in the year, reach out and ask for a private meeting or phone call to discuss how things are going. If there are any issues, you want to be aware of them right away so that you can redirect before bad habits form. Having good communication with your child’s teachers and principal will ensure you can give your child the support they need all school year long. Your child can also find motivation from knowing you care so much about how they are doing in school!

2. Designate Study Hours
Depending on the age of your child, they may need to do anywhere between a half hour to 2 hours of studying or homework after school. Having a consistent time for studying each day helps your child get accustomed to regular study habits. Without a designated study schedule in place, it can be easy to forget to set aside this time especially with after school activities, appointments, and family plans.

3. Explore School Resources
Talk with your school administrators about the resources available to students. They might include after school tutoring, volunteer opportunities, test preparation, and mental health counseling. Each student has unique needs, and school leaders strive to give everyone the tools they need to be successful. Make sure you are aware of all the resources your child has access to in case they ever need them throughout the year.

4. Consider Tutoring
Even the best teachers out there can only give so much one-on-one attention to each student. Sometimes, kids need a little more than that and that is completely normal. If your child needs extra support, consider working with a private one-on-one or small group tutor after school. Not only can a private tutor help students better understand difficult topics, but they can also become a mentor and positive role model. Club Z! Tutoring in Glenbrook provides individualized tutoring to make sure your child gets all the support they need to stay on track all year long. Don’t let them fall behind; Club Z! Tutoring Glenbrook can help with specific subjects, test prep, organization skills, and time management.
