How We Ensure that We are on the Same Page as Your Child's Teachers

Tutor/Teacher Teamwork Makes The Dream Work

In an earlier blog post, we discussed how your tutor and child’s teacher can work together. We noted that when you hire a tutor to assist with your child’s education, it can be challenging for tutors and teachers to be on the same page.

Today, we’re pulling back the curtain to give you a look into the Club Z! method of ensuring that our tutors and your child’s teachers are always aligned.

Communication
It all begins with effective communication between the teacher, our administrative staff, and tutor.

After a family signs up for tutoring sessions, we send out an introductory email (with parental consent of course) to the child's teacher. Parents and the child's tutor are copied in the email as well. In that introductory email, we introduce ourselves, notify the teacher that we are working with their student, and ask for any insight regarding the student's needs or learning style. This allows our tutors to understand their student’s struggles from the start so they can prepare sessions that focus on practical solutions. With input from teachers, the tutor is equipped with important details so they can formulate a customized solution that will work for that particular student.

But the communication doesn’t end there.

The email thread serves as an open line of communication for the parent, tutor and teacher so that everyone involved in the child's education can share valuable insights on student progress, challenges, and areas of development. As a result, the tutor can identify opportunities to engage the students in a way that resonates with them. This improves their ability to successfully help a child reach their full potential.

Considering Subject Matter
Before tutoring sessions begin, we encourage our families to share as much information as possible about the student's curriculum. It’s crucial for our tutors to understand what a child is expected to achieve based on the subject matter and what’s holding them back.

For example, if a student is struggling with algebra, but the tutor is unaware the student has difficulty grasping basic concepts such as multiplication and division, they can tailor their approach and notify the math teacher of the bigger picture. Anything the teacher can share with the tutor allows the tutor to dig deeper. When they continue the conversation with the teacher, they work effectively together to help a student succeed.

Planning Ahead
When our tutors understand what is coming next, they can prepare their students with the knowledge they need to be more successful moving forward. This way, the student isn’t just learning what they need to know now but also how it will impact what is coming down the pike.

When the tutor understands the upcoming units, they can incorporate exercises such as pretests to improve a student’s competence.

Collaborative Approach
Teachers are often frustrated that they can’t dedicate enough time to help struggling students. This is where we come in. We look at our support as a partnership with schools and teachers and certainly not a “stepping on toes” situation. As educators, we embrace the teacher/tutor relationship because it enhances the level of attention and support to guide students forward.
